If you’re thinking about buying a home in Lake Stevens and schools are part of your decision, there’s something important I want you to know before you start looking at houses: the home you choose can determine which school your child attends.
I was born and raised here in Lake Stevens, so I’ve watched this community grow and change over the years. Today, buyers are looking at everything from established neighborhoods near the lake to newer developments around town. But when I work with buyers who have school-age children, finding the right house isn’t always just about bedrooms, square footage, or the size of the backyard.
The address matters, too.
School Boundaries Can Make Two Nearby Homes Very Different
Lake Stevens School District currently has seven elementary schools: Glenwood, Highland, Hillcrest, Mt. Pilchuck, Skyline, Stevens Creek, and Sunnycrest. Students in grades six and seven attend either Lake Stevens Middle School or North Lake Middle School based on their attendance area. Eighth- and ninth-graders attend Cavelero Mid High School, while students in grades 10 through 12 attend Lake Stevens High School.
For a buyer, the important part is that school placement is tied to the residential address.
That means you shouldn’t assume a house belongs to a particular elementary or middle school simply because that school appears to be the closest one. Two homes that seem like they’re in essentially the same area can potentially fall within different attendance boundaries.
Before making an offer on a Lake Stevens home because of a particular school, I recommend verifying the address through the Lake Stevens School District’s SchoolSite Locator and confirming important enrollment questions directly with the district.
Sports Are a Big Part of the Lake Stevens School Experience
For families with kids who play sports, athletics may be another factor worth considering when deciding whether Lake Stevens is the right place to call home.
The Lake Stevens School District offers organized athletics beginning at the middle-school level, with opportunities expanding significantly in high school. Depending on grade level and season, students can participate in sports including football, basketball, wrestling, cross country, track and field, volleyball, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, baseball, softball, and golf.
At Lake Stevens High School, the Vikings compete throughout the fall, winter, and spring seasons. Football is certainly one of the more visible parts of the local sports culture, but the athletic program goes well beyond Friday night football. Students have opportunities across team and individual sports, and the high school also emphasizes athletics alongside academics, arts, and activities as ways for students to stay connected to their school community.
Growing up in Lake Stevens, I’ve seen how school sports can bring people together. Games aren’t only about what happens on the field or court. They can become part of the community experience for students, parents, alumni, and local residents.
For buyers with young athletes, it’s worth researching the programs available for their child’s grade and sport. Some high-school teams have limited roster spots and require tryouts, so participation should never be assumed simply because a student lives within the district.
Capacity Is Especially Important for 2026–27
There’s another reason I think buyers should pay close attention to school boundaries right now.
For the 2026–27 school year, Lake Stevens School District has determined that all of its schools are at capacity. Because of overcrowding, the district also says new enrollment is currently limited to students living within district boundaries, meaning new non-resident variances are not being approved for the school year.
That makes buying the right address more important than assuming you can purchase somewhere else and simply transfer your child into the Lake Stevens school you prefer.
Even an in-district transfer shouldn’t be treated as guaranteed. The district explains that transfers depend on factors that include available space.
If a particular school is important to your home search, this is something I would want us to investigate before you fall in love with a property.
Lake Stevens Is Growing — and the Schools Are Changing With It
Anyone who has lived here for a long time has seen how much Lake Stevens has grown. The school district is responding to that growth as well.
Lake Stevens School District is currently constructing its eighth elementary school. The new school is planned for approximately 750 students and is expected to initially open for the 2027–28 school year to temporarily serve Glenwood Elementary students while Glenwood is modernized.
There’s another detail prospective homebuyers should know: after those construction transitions, the district plans to review elementary attendance boundaries to help balance enrollment.
In other words, school boundaries can change over time.
That doesn’t mean buyers should be nervous about purchasing here. It simply means school assignments should be treated as something to verify rather than something to assume will remain exactly the same forever.
Choosing a Lake Stevens Home Is About More Than the School Name
When I help someone search for a home here, I think it’s important to look at the complete picture.
Maybe you want to be close to your child’s school or sporting activities. Maybe your morning commute matters just as much. Perhaps you want an established neighborhood, newer construction, a larger lot, easier access to Highway 9 or Highway 2, or simply a part of Lake Stevens that feels right for the way you live.
That’s where local knowledge becomes valuable.
An online home search can show you bedrooms, bathrooms, price, photos, and estimated school information. What it can’t always tell you is how all those pieces fit together for your particular move.
